Commondale Camp – 11th-13th July

Arapaho, Cherokee and the Scouts joined together for the weekend to head up to Commondale near Whitby for a camp.

We left on Friday evening and got to Raven Gill Campsite in time to get everything set up before it got too dark. There was then just enough time to go for a night walk navigated by the stars and have some supper before bed.

Once everyone was up on Saturday morning, the Cubs and Scouts cooked their own bacon butties for breakfast and even did all their own washing up! While the Cubs got ready for the days activities, we headed off to Whitby for the day,

We went fossil hunting down at the bottom of the cliff that Whitby Abbey stands on, finding ammonites, belemnites and shells. We also had great fun burying each other in the sand on the beach! Fish and chips were on the menu for lunch despite the seagull flying away with some and we had a walk all around Whitby town.

Everyone also had the option of sleeping outside in bivvies on Saturday night too which the Cubs put up and a few slept in with their sleeping and survival bags.

Tea of spaghetti bolognese was cooked with a selection of methods; billy cans on charcoal, dutch ovens and Swedish log candles which were new to everyone. We finished the night off with a small campfire and come songs before supper, bed and the rain arrived!

Sausage sandwiches were cooked by the Cubs and Scouts for breakfast on Sunday morning before we started packing up. The rain then came back so whilst we waited for it to stop, everyone got to visit the little shop on site whilst the Cubs made water filters and the Scouts got creative with paracord.

It was then time for all the tents to go down a little damp and a final litter sweep of the site before it was back on the buses to go home!

We hope everyone had a great weekend and all the leaders were impressed by the Cubs and Scouts behavior!
