Chef Badge

This week the older group did the practical part of their Chef Badge and cooked a 2 course meal each. They did a brilliant job as it was all edible and tasted great!

Dementia Friends

This week Beavers had a visit from Dementia Friends as part of their A Million Hands Project. They learnt all about how the brain works and how Dementia affects everyday tasks that we take for granted. At the end of the session they talked about how they can help by raising awareness.

Minecraft Sleepover

To kick off our year of celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Cubs, 26 very excited Cherokee Cubs spent the night at the Den this weekend doing all things Minecraft! Volcanic Explosions!

Our older Cubs got scientific this week and made exploding volcanoes! This goes towards their Scientist Badge and don’t they look the part!

Cakes & Construction

This week our 2 younger groups made a cake in a mug and talked about a balanced diet as part of the new Skills Challenge badge. Meanwhile our older Cubs worked in teams to see who could construct the tallest tower out of spaghetti and marshmallows.

Cyclist Badge

After our visits to Halfords, the cubs just had the practical part of their cyclist badge to complete. For this we had Steve who teaches cycling proficiency come down and put us through our paces!

Mini-beast Hunting

The Beavers got up close and personal with nature this week, carefully capturing mini-beasts and identify them under microscopes. They also continued their work towards the gardening badge by transferring the tomato plants they grew from seeds into hanging baskets and tackling some more of those nettles.  

Silver Chief Scout Award

Congratulations to Finlay who was awarded his Silver Chief Scout Award this week! He’s put in lots of hard work both at Cherokee and Ferriby & Swanland Cubs to gain all of his challenge badges so well done!

A Visit to Nut Wood

This week the Beavers went for a wander around Nut Wood. Here they learnt how trees change during the different seasons for their Gardeners Badge and had a look at some bivvys before making their own Beaver Lodge!

Camp Preparation

Sedan Chairs in the Country Park

We went down into the Country Park to put the knots we learnt last week into practice making Sedan Chairs. To test if they were up to standard we then carried one of our six for a short distance around the Park. Some knots lasted longer than others!

Wolds Challenge 2015

This year we entered 2 teams into the Wolds Challenge, a day hike competition to test navigation and teamwork skills. Both teams completed the course with only one team having a slight navigational error! We are still waiting for the official results of where the two teams placed.  

Beavers Go Green Fingered

Firestation Visit

This week we went to visit Calvert Lane Firestation as part of our Fire Safety badge. We got to look around all the base and the fire engines learning lots about how the Firemen do their job. At the end of the night they even let us have a go on the hose!

Glen & Ian are Invested

Creative Challenge

This week we finished off our Creative Challenge badge. This involved decorating cards and bags for Mothers Day, breaking some codes and creating videos to advertise Scouting. Everyone did really well to stand up in front of the camera and perform, the adverts will be on display in the Scout Den.

Bronze Chief Scout Awards

Tonight we also had 8 Beavers gain their Bronze Chief Scout Award! This is highest award available to Beavers and a lot of hard work has gone into earning all their Challenge Badges so Paul our GSL came down to present them. Well done Lucas, Ollie, Fred, Matthew, Tom, Connor, Oliver & James!

A Campfire with St Hildas Beavers

This week we had a visit from St Hildas Beavers in Hull. They joined us for the last part of our creative challenge, making musical instruments! Everyone had a go at toasting marshmallows and then we sung some classic campfire songs and played our instruments along too.

Pets at Home Visit

Map Reader Badge

Over the past 3 weeks the Cubs have been learning and refreshing their map skills. This has involved making contour models out of lego, matching up map symbols, practicing grid references, planning routes on Google Maps and learning compass points. Puppet Show

This week the Beavers came up with their own stories and then made puppets to act them out with. We had shows ranging from ninja turtles to pirates!

Construction Night

This week as part of our Creative Challenge, we had a night constructing things. We made catapults out of lolly sticks and had great fun testing them out. We also used our imaginations to create vehicles and bridges out of lego.

Gold Chief Scout Award

Drew has been awarded his Gold Chief Scout Award after putting in a lot of hard work. Paul our GSL came and awarded Drew with his badge and certificate on Friday evening. Well done Drew!

Up in the Air!

This week the Beavers looked at all things airborne. We made paper aeroplanes, hovercrafts and helicopters. Of course at the end of the night we had to see who’s could fly the furthest and the highest!

Cubs & Compasses

This week we have been learning all about the points on a compass. This includes their names and their degrees away from North. This along with a look at some map symbols is the start of the work we’ll do towards our Map Readers badge.

Silver Chief Scout Award

Tonight Paul came down to award Alfie with his Silver Chief Scout Award. After putting in the work to complete all of his challenge badges this is the highest award a Cub can gain so well done Alfie!
