Cherokee Cubs were set some problem solving and teamwork challenges to complete. A sack race with their whole team in the sack, moving their team along the car park on skis, as well as lashing some broom handles onto chairs to carry a member of their six. Lots of laughter in the sunshine!
Backwoods Cooking
Hessle Navajo Scouts enjoyed some backwoods cooking on the banks of the River Humber last night. After the Scouts had found enough wood and built their fire, they baked foil parcels of meat and veg in the embers. They also were successful in BBQ’ing burgers on cabbage leaves.
Chief Scout Bronze Award
Congratulations to Ryan, Sam and Joey on achieving their Chief Scout Bronze Award. We also waved farewell to them, along with Oscar and Isaac, as they started their swim up the river to Cubs.
Bouldering!
Arapaho Cubs finished their term with a bouldering session at RockCity’s Space Room and The Castle. Always great to hear the cubs ask their adults if they can come back with the family next week! And a very big well done to everyone who received badges tonight.

Wind Power
As part of their Environmental Conservation badge Cherokee Cubs completed a hike from The Deep to the Ferry Terminal. This enabled them to stop along the way and have a look at and chat about the wind turbines that are made at Siemens, as well as admire the sculptures along the way.
Spring Hike
Beavers enjoyed their first hike of the year, walking along the foreshore from Hessle to North Ferriby. We couldn’t have picked a nicer evening for the walk, although a little misty, the setting sun was a huge bright orange ball in the sky.

Arapaho Cubs spent a night at The Deep. They started with a tour and talk from knowledgeable guides, completed some craft activities, and then got to sleep alongside the fish tanks. On Saturday morning they had breakfast overlooking the Humber and a visit to see the penguins!

Disability Awareness
Beavers enjoyed a talk from Richard who works at Guide Dogs. We learnt about how guide dogs assist people, how they are trained and cared for and the equipment used. We also learnt about the different types of eye sight problems people can have by trying on some special glasses.

Nurture Nature
As part of Humberside Scouts ‘Put the Out in Scout’ Challenge, Explorers completed the Nurture Nature section by undertaking a litter pick along Hessle Foreshore and in the Humber Bridge Country Park.
Pioneering
Arapaho Cubs and their new adult helpers have been learning how to tie knots, hitches and lashings. They all enjoyed putting this knowledge and their imagination to the test by building a shelter frame, washing line and billy can tripod. Well done to everyone for picking up these pioneering skills so quickly!
Safety first
As part of their Personal Safety and Road Safety badges, Cherokee Cubs enjoyed a visit from Holly from Humberside Police. We learnt about the different roles she has carried out as a police officer, looked around the police car, and got to try on lots of her equipment.

Defying Gravity
Cherokee Cubs bounced their way out of the autumn term with a trip to Gravity. Lots of fun and rosy cheeks by the end of the evening. We also said farewell to Ava, Harrison and Owen as they move up to Scouts. We look forward to seeing everyone again on 10 January 2022.

Orienteering in the Park
Beavers always ask why they need a torch in their rucksack, so we went on a hike so that they could use them – orienteering around Peter Pan Park in the dark! As it was the last week of term we also presented lots of badges.
Recycle the Recycling
Beavers love an evening with a pile of junk. As part of the Builder activity badge, their challenge was to create a vehicle that was able to transport a small plastic ball. Night Hike
At a recent pack forum, Cherokee Cubs requested to go for a hike in the dark, so that’s what we did. The sixers and seconders planned the route from Melton Bottom to Welton, and then helped their sixes navigate their way in the dark.
Wolds Challenge 2021

Speedy Cyclists
As part of our cyclist badge, Rusty demonstrated how to pump our bicycle tyres, Keeo and Malak checked everyone was wearing their helmet correctly and a hi-viz jacket, and then we managed to cycle and scooter across the Humber Bridge and back in record time. Welton Waters
Cherokee Cubs had a splashing time at Welton Waters. They took part in some team water games, and went out on the lake in rafted canoes, working towards their Time on the Water and Paddle Sports badges.

Beavers have been working towards their Safety Activity Badge, and to link with water safety we visited Humber Rescue. The crew shared their knowledge and experience with us, and we got to have a close up look at the boats and the kit they have to wear.

Chief Scout Silver Award
Congratulations to Cherokee Cubs Ava and Alexander on achieving their Chief Scout Silver Award. Charlotte, our GSL, presented them before Cubs went off for a hike around Nut Wood, where they found some dens to shelter from the rain.
Wolds Way Hike
Explorers met at the weekend to enable them to undertake a longer hike, completing 15.5 km in 4 hours on a section of the Wolds Way, that was a bit muddy in places! They also did a spot of geocaching along the way.
Nut Wood Dens
For part of the Outdoor Challenge badge Beavers have to make something to help animals in the wild. We had a visit to Nut Wood and made minature dens from sticks, moss and leaves for the small animals that live there, such as hedgehogs, squirrels, mice, voles and badgers.
Cooking in Oranges
Explorers have continued their cooking theme this term, with another visit to Raywell Park. This time they experimented with cooking in oranges in the embers of the fire.
Teamwork
Arapaho Cubs have been focusing on the benefits of working as a team. They took part in peer-led blindfold courses, problem solving activities and learned how to put up and take down tents.
